Hi Jeff,

i think you have to remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manfold. This is fixed with 2 bolts only. You need to do so to have a free workspace and to get the starter out.

Hi Jeff

please be careful, because the screws are very tight and require a high torque. Good tools are needed, once the Allen screw is worn out, it becomes difficult. Good succeed.

Best Regards

Thanks Wolfgang, what a horrible job but its out now just have to wait for a new one to be delivered then put it back. oh the joys of owning an old timer, but hopefully will never have to change it again, although they are a fantastic design in otherways, they didnt give much thought to some of the jobs we have to do to keep them on the road.

Moin what is very important is definitely the battery + disconnect.
Since the + goes to the starter.

.... Question is why the starter should be replaced?

Sometimes it is only an electric problem with the wiring, missing chassis-ground, or bad contact of a switch . Werner can give you special advice. Check may be done with an separate cable (fused) direct from battery to the contact at the starter-selenoid.

Hi Peter, the starter motor was totally kaput, and it is after all 38 yrs old, so now it will have a new one fitted tomorrow if the weather is good.
the joy of owning a classic vehicle.
